Glasgow's West End

family breaks

Glasgow's prestigious West End was largely developed in the mid nineteenth century boasting stunning architecture including rows of Victorian sandstone terraces and mews houses. The Belhaven is a fine example of a classical Victorian townhouse within a beautiful tree-lined setting.

Byres Road is the main focal point of this vibrant cultural district, combining contemporary elegance with bohemian chic in its array of boutiques and eateries. If retail indulgence is on your agenda, take your pick from vintage clothing to luxury homeware and gifts. Neighbouring Kelvinbridge has a fine selection of curiosities from small art studios to antique and second hand bookstores.

Dining out in the West End caters for all culinary tastes and budgets, from the top restaurants to modest cafés and delicatessens aligning the West End's main thoroughfares. Traditional Scottish cuisine with a contemporary twist at the Buttery merits a visit with seafood and game featuring on its menu. The West End is also home to award winning Indian and Tandoori restaurants, some of them the longest established in Scotland, namely the Shish Mahal and Ashoka.

Art and culture enthusiasts are treated to some of Glasgow's finest collections of visual art, from renaissance to contemporary. Designed by Glasgow's most prolific architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the Hunterian Art Gallery boasts an exquisite and intriguing range of prints, paintings and sketches by Europe's greatest artists including Rodin and Rembrandt. The building itself offers an unusual design, as a reconstruction of Mackintosh's former residence. The newly restored Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum never fails to captivate visitors of all ages with its dazzling array of frescos, impressionist paintings and taxidermy.

For nightlife and entertainment, the West End offers an array of pubs and clubs which add to the cosmopolitan ambience. Ashton Lane is a popular and trendy destination, boasting a mix of pubs offering a fine selection of beers and lagers, many showcasing live entertainment. For a traditional Scottish affair, the Lismore Bar in Dumbarton Road is a mecca for malt whisky enthusiasts. Alternatively, why not catch a live comedy gig at the ever-popular Stand Comedy Club on Woodlands Road.
