| This theatre has always been a theatre
for the citizens of Glasgow and has staged productions, which Glasgow
playgoers would never have had the opportunity of seeing. The theatre's
vision changed in the 1970s and its aim was to provide low price tickets
to theatregoers, the provision of free previews of every show and
free programmes to the audience. This policy is still adhered to 30
years on.
As part of Gorbals Street Urban redevelopment, an extensive refurbishment
programme was carried out to the Citizen's Theatre in the late 1980s.
The new atrium foyer was built in 1989 followed by the construction
of the Stalls and Circle Studio spaces. The theatre's modification
has proved successful for many of the Citizens' popular touring
performances, namely, Irvine Welsh's Trainspotting and Filth.
The Citizens' is proud to host its own theatre production company,
The Citizen's Company. The company has performed commissioned translations
of works by Balzac, Beaumarchais, Alegria, Goethe, Goldoni, amongst
others and have made guest appearances in many cities across Europe.
Glasgow's Citizen's Theatre has received national lottery and Scottish
Arts Council funding to facilitate access, including the installation
of lifts, wheelchair access ramps, a new stage door and an extra
large-scale rehearsal room. The extra facilities and space are used
by range of theatre and arts organisations and local community groups.
