Pavilion Theatre

.. [Return to Glasgow Theatres Index]

The Pavilion Theatre in Glasgow has preserved its strong music hall traditions, being a regular purveyor of variety shows and performances. This Glasgow Theatre is remarkable self-sufficient and receives no funding from the National Lottery unlike its nearby counter parts, The Theatre Royal and The Kings's.

Glasgow's Pavilion Theatre was opened in 1904, and features a striking terra cotta façade, a domed ceiling with a sliding roof for ventilation. The Theatre's interior is lavishly opulent and ornate with fine Rococo plasterwork on the circle, balcony and box fronts, reminiscent to Louis XV interior design. This 1800 seat theatre has the finest mahogany and marble floor in the country lending to its aura of Edwardian elegance and grandeur.

Pavilion Theatre
Legends and worthies in the music hall circuit have performed at the Glasgow Pavilion Theatre at some or other. It's strong pantomime tradition has been long preserved since the 1930s with Harry Gordon and Dave Willis alternating and staging shows for eight weeks at a time before moving east to perform at The Theatre Royal, Edinburgh.

Today, The Pavilion plays host to a range of comic favourites such as Jimmy Tarbuck, Billy Connolly as well as new arrivals in the comedy scene, namely, Patrick Kielty and Ed Byrne. Today, the theatre preserves its strong pantomime tradition with Christmas performances of Aladdin, Snow White, Jack in the Beanstalk and many more, featuring renowned Scottish actors and comedians.
