Glasgow Attractions - The SSE Hydro
The SSE Hydro is situated on the banks of the river Clyde. It is a 12,000 seat capacity venue in Glasgow making it the largest entertainments venues in Scotland. The building cost £125million to build and hosts about 140 events throughout the year. This includes music concerts and sporting occasions which attracts over a million visitors a year and brings in more than £130million a year to the Glasgow economy.
It was created by the same architects, Foster and Partners who also created one of Glasgow’s most iconic landmarks, the SECC's Clyde Auditorium also known as the “Armadillo”. The arena officially opened on 30 September 2013 with no other than Rod Stewart opening the proceedings.
What sets the SSE Hydro apart is the interior design which has been carefully thought through. With outstanding viewing angles from each of the 12,000 seats in the fixed, tiered and demountable seating system and a lot of attention to detail to the acoustical environment.
The venue has attracted (and continues to attract) some of the biggest names in showbusiness including Fleetwood Mac, Bruno Mars and Calvin Harris. Comedians Miranda Hart and Jack Whitehall make regular appearances. It has played large roles in global sporting events including the Commonwealth Games and the World Gymnastics Championships.
